PWA Lanzarote World Cup, Day 4, 03.07.10:
A faultless repertoire of moves ensures our Gollito Estredo claims victory ahead of Thode, whilst Yoli de Brendt finished 2nd and Laure Treboux 3rd in the female fleet!
1-2-3 - a super result for Fanatic, well done Gollo, Yoli & Laure!!!
It´s the 4th time in a row that our Triple Freestyle World Champ Gollito won the PWA Freestyle event in Lanzarote now (2007, 2008, 2009 & 2010), a tremendous achievement!
And Yoli de Brendt is the new Freestyle World Vice Ladies Champion, there won´t be any other event besides Lanzarote!
Men:
In an action packed single elimination final, the 2009 freestyle world champion Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic, North) met the kono king, Kiri Thode (Starboard, Gaastra). Both sailors pulled off an array of technical trickery, including the most stylish culos, burners, matadors, and konos the crowds had seen all week. On the beach it looked like Thode had out styled Estredo, but the world champion’s moves were bigger and more technical, with an awesomely executed one handed regular chachoo being the final nail in Thode’s coffin.
Women:
The women’s final was without doubt the most impressive display ever seen in PWA competition to date. Yoli Freites De Brendt (Fanatic, North) put together an excellent mixture of moves including flakas, spock 540s, and forward loops. However, it wasn’t quite enough to take on two times freestyle world champion, Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard, Vandal) who threw down a fistful of tricks with an abundance of style to claim yet another victory.
The women’s loser’s final was sailed twice due to the gusty conditions, which inevitably piled the pressure on Laure Treboux (Fanatic, North) and Junko Nagoshi (Tabou, Simmer, Dakine). Despite a few lulls over the course in the second attempt, head judge, Duncan Coombs decided to allow the heat to count. Treboux racked up the points with some impressive clew first spock 540s, and a very stylish fully planing grubby to nudge ahead of Nagoshi who fought hard throughout the heat, but didn’t quite have the flair of the Swiss style icon.

PWA Lanzarote World Cup, Day 3, 02.07.10:
Fanatic´s Gollito Estredo & Yoli de Brendt spin their way through to the final!!!
The world’s top tricksters awoke to an overcast sky this morning, which frustratingly halted any thermal effects from boosting the usually consistent trade winds to a suitable level for competition until late in the evening. Luckily, spirits were held high throughout the day, so when the time came, those at the front of the fleet were ready for action.
The men managed to find seven minutes of consistent wind enabling them to complete their semi-finals, but the women were left sinking out to sea as soon as their flags went up. Head judge, Duncan Coombs and the rest of his crew, made every effort to get the competition going with each gust, but in the end it just wasn’t enough, and had to be abandoned for another day.
Men:
Tonky Frans (F2, Gaastra) battled it out for a place in the final with the 2009 world champion, Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic, North). Again, both sailors had an extremely close heat, but Estredo managed to edge out in front with an awesome funnel cana brava launching himself straight into the final with his old rival Thode. This leaves Frans to fight it out for third with Soltysiak.
Women
After a failed attempt to run the winner’s final the women’s competition remains at exactly the same point as yesterday with two times world freestyle champion, Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard, Vandal) waiting patiently to meet Yoli Freites De Brendt (Fanatic, North).
PWA Lanzarote World Cup, Day 2, 01.07.10:
Super results for Gollito & Yoli - well done!!!
A relaxing morning fooled many of the PWA’s sail spinning maestros into thinking the competition would be on hold for the entire day. However, the wind gods blessed the sailors by turning the fans on in Las Cucharas Bay bang on one o’clock, creating a freestyle haven for those that had entered.
Fifteen to twenty knot winds meant that sub 5.0m sails and 90-100l boards were the pick of the day. Unfortunately, late in the afternoon a competing breeze began to push back the trades, and at six in the evening the competition had to be postponed for another day. The men’s fleet battled their way through to the semi-finals where Canadian Philip Soltysiak (Starboard, Dakine) will meet the boy from Bonaire Kiri Thode (Starboard, Gaastra). And, born and bred styler Tonky Frans (F2, Gaastra) will go head to head with the 2009 World Champion Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic, North) to decide who heads in to the winner’s, and loser’s finals. In the women’s fleet, they flipped and spun their way a little bit further with the unstoppable Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard, Vandal) left waiting to take on Yolanda Freites De Brendt (Fanatic, North) in the winner’s final.
Gollito Returns!!!
Perfect tens from the judges saw Estredo style his way through his heats with ease to claim his place in the finals. Amongst other things, arched back culos, and his new perfectly executed back to sail bob blew his competitors away. If Estredo continues to sail the way he did today we could see the world champion bouncing back to where he belongs - at the top of the podium.
Jolly Yoli!!!
Following an awesome performance against Junko Nagoshi (Tabou, Simmer, Dakine), De Brendt spun her way into the final where she’ll meet two times world champion Offringa. This is De Brendt’s chance to really shine, if she takes down Offringa, she could become a world champ, but even if she doesn’t, it’s an awesome achievement making it this far.
PWA Lanzarote World Cup, Day 1, 30.06.10:
The most impressive men’s and women’s freestyle fleets descended on the golden sands of Lanzarote’s Las Cucharas beach today, but the wind failed to show up with them meaning they’ll have to spend another night agonizing over who’ll be crowned the king and queen of the Canaries.
Initial signs of wind proved fruitless after it teased the competitors throughout the day, but was never quite enough for official competition to commence. However, this didn’t stop our Triple Freestyle World Champ Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic, North) and a bunch of other high profile sailors from hitting the water early to practice in the light breeze. They even managed to get planing on occasions on the way in after a few pumps and a small wave gave them a helping hand.
And, despite the conditions, Gollito took the opportunity to unleash his latest weapon of mass destruction, which looked a bit like a back to sail bob variation. This then enthused even more of the sailors to hit the water, including Tonky Frans (F2, Gaastra), and Anthony Ruenes (Tabou, Vandal) who quickly turned their attentions to learning the new move. Needless to say, Gollito was nailing them with his eyes shut whilst the others fell at his feet. It’ll be interesting to see how the judges score the move when the competition gets underway.
