We have talked to Andre about the "Making Of":
When did first think about doing a movie only about Gollito Estredo?
Right after the premier of “minds wide open” I felt kind of empty inside and asked myself what to do now? My wish for 2012 was traveling and filming as much as possible and I thought about the best way to combine it. Gollito, being the main character of my new movie was a perfect match because he is my best friend, he has an incredible talent and I was sure that he had the potential to be very successful in 2012. Besides that we both are sailing for the same brands of Boards & More. At the beginning of the project I thought more about an action movie with new high speed camera sequences. But with the time it turned more into a documentary movie about his life which is indeed very unusual and special.
What makes it so special?
(Andre smiles) Watch the movie and you´ll find out!
Where have you travelled to shoot the movie?
Of course to his home spot in Venezuela where he has been training for the last season. And then I followed him to Fuerteventura, where he won the big PWA Grandprix in Freestyle. The last trip we did was to Tarifa to visit our friend Stefan Beat, a good friend and actually the first one who discovered the talent of Gollito ten years ago in Venezuela.
Was it hard or easy to convince the inner circle of Gollito to talk in front of the camera?
It wasn´t so hard to get them talking but it was hard to make them understand that for an interesting interview it is important to talk about the negative sides of someone. I don´t like faked “everything is easy” interviews, if something is or was shit it should be expressed frankly in the interview. A lot of people believed that it would be bad for Gollito to describe how he had lived in his childhood, but I think the opposite is true they do him good. There was a lot of persuasion to do also towards Gollito, don’t forget they all are from South America. There they want to be seen at their best. The final results speak in its favor. I believe everyone immediately recognizes that the truth was a plus and indeed did him good.
Which interview partner did impress you most and why?
Certainly his mothers, although Gollito is one my best friend and I have been a lot of times in El Yaque, I never met her before. In the past other things were more important but it was only after my illness that I learned to take a closer look and understand the inner value of a person. Gollitos Mum is a wonderful woman. She is very cultivated with a lot of awareness for the moment. When she described how Gollito build her a home there was a total silence for 10 minutes. Each of us sat there with tears in their eyes. But Gollito himself also impressed me. I never heard that much of Gullito even not during his successful years and the numerous interviews he gave. He appears nice, smart, and simply cool. His words are well set and his English is good and it touched me deeply. When I get goose flesh, it definitely is good.
Why the name?
It happened in a bar in Tarifa with a bunch of friends. A sign was hanging there saying REWARD. I thought that fits well Gollito has talent, but 5 times world champion is a result of talent plus training. His commitment to the water got REWARDED.
Did he want you to authorize anything?
No, I think Gollito knows that he can trust me. I love windsurfing it is my one and only. I will always try to do my projects as good as possibly, this is the demand to myself even though I am suffering cancer and Gollito knows that as we became really close friends over the years.
