Hi everybody,

I'm going to buy my first fanatic board! A twin 72 TE 2009!
My previous board (a guerilla 2006) cracked twice where my heels are, so I was wondering if the fanatic is any stronger to handle those impacts?
Also, is the nose any strong/impact resistant?

Also I noticed a gain in weight for the 10 models, why is that?

Ant is right agai. Dont choose the windiest day. More often its crappy than brilliant and volume helps to save your sailing day... Thats my experience.

The quad 79l is probably similar to 76l single and the 86l quad is similar to the 83l single.

With you weight you wont have control problems as the quads work best with strong wind...

Support beginners as well as the superstars

Hi Guys

As a beginner its nice to see footage of amazing skills and high wind / wave sailing - BUT what we REALLY need is support and help doing the basics as we don't have the skills and experience to know if we are using the equipment in the way that gets the best out of it.

I really think Fanatic should invest in producing some support material and collateral for their army of new beginners and intermediate sailors and I really think this kind of support would only enhance Fantic's reputation for producing excellent products for these markets.

I recently purchased a fanatic viper 85 with a 6.0M ride sail and rig in the UK.

My friends and I are new to the sport and have had a couple of lessons but are by no means experienced. I was amazed to find that there were no basic rigging instructions in the pack (either the board or the rig) and I ended up having to phone the company I bought it from for some advice and then working it out by trial and error with my sailing buddies. Bearing in mind the Viper is essentially a beginners / intermediate board I couldn't actually believe that there were no instructions and tips / advice covering off basic rigging so that beginners can be assured that they are getting the best out of the rig and board.

Surely it is in Fanatic best interests to support their user with some simple guidance on areas such as -

a) How far to extend the boom. What length to have the mast extension (ok you can work these out and measure but there is no explanation of the numbers on the boom OR the mast extension)

b) nor is there any advice on position of the mast foot (no explanation of the numbers on the board and where you should put the mast foot!!) - There is also no information on footstrap position and adjustment in relation to weight and ability...

c) It would be really useful to have some photos or diagrams that show the best way to run the ropes and how to cleat them / tension the ropes etc. And nothing about tensioning battens (North rigs do a really good 2 part video on youtube that explains this stuff quite well- but not everything is appropriate to the Fanatic Ride rigs that I have)

My group of friends are all beginners and although we got the rig together we have no idea if we have done it in the way that gets the BEST out of the equipment.

With its network of schools and reputation in the learners market, Fanatic could really produce some fantastic instructions/guidance either supplied with the board or videos / .pdf downloads on the site and Youtube etc.

We all want to perform the perfect carve jibe and wave sail in Maui and we love watching the team riders doing mind blowing stuff - but this is aspiration for the future and NOT current reality - It would be nice to have some support on this channel for those starting in the sport - don't forget if you treat us right we will be with you for years (and spend lots of money on kit as we get better!!!)

Many Thanks for a great product...

Go for it, if your priority is only riding, then 100% for sure you will appreciate the Quad feeling, is a further evolution of your Twin in waveriding. the Twin is stil a great allrounder and is better for planing/speed than the quad, but the Quad is better on waveriding and will be better in the higher winds too than your twin...

Thanks Ant and Jochen!

...but I am still a bit secptical of such a wide board like the 86 is. Don't you think I'll get blown away if the wind picks up for 4.2 oder 3.7?

And what about the turns? A single fin with such a width I would never get into a proper bottom turn... Is it with 4 fins different?

I have to admit, I still have my 69 litres Mistral Wave Single fin 2009 which I can use for really high winds but I want the quad to be my allround board. If the wind gets just a little bit gusty (which is often here) the mistral is just toooo small.

I think for Cape Town, the 79 would be the better choice, right?!

@Jochen: Could you explain the differences between the 79 and 86?
Are the quads in general early planing or do I need a bit of extra volume?

Greetings,
Sven

Hi Zappy,

just click at http://www.fanatic.com/content/products/windsurfboards/index_eng.html and read the infos about each boardline and then you can choose the models pending at your weight and sail sizes. Of the quad line i think only the biggest one, the 93l suits you...

Dont know so much about Northsails but i think its Ego, Ice, Duke, Drive and Natural that work good with waveboards...

I think theres no need to buy special sails as wavesails have a very good handling. Maybe just a small sail extra like a 2,5m2...

For kids the wider the board, the better and over 120l then its ok... Check that the board is not slippery!!!!

GREETZ FROM TENERIFE,

Jochen

HI Spocker,

i can fully agree with Ant...

i am the same weight as you and i had to choose as well. I tried them both against each other. Under 78kg i would take the 79l. Everything above that till 86kg i would take the 86l. I took the 86l board as allround waveboard form me with 80 to 82kg. For our weight thats perfect... I have a 2nd set of smaller fins for highwind...

Hi Sven

good to hear you are bearing the fruits of life :) weight isnt a bad thing now as the quads are slightly more bouyant which is a good thing as im a fan of slightly bigger boards, my brother uses a 79 for a 5.0 down and a 86 for the bigger sizes, he is also 80kg but he sails heaps, i would choose the bigger board for UK as you would get on the board more.

hope this helps

Hi all,

hmm, the internet reveals all secrets...:-)

those volumes are from the Cobra spec sheets, where they use a pool/displacement system to analyse the volume, or a scanner, which is not accurate. The actual CAD volumes as calculated by Sebastian Wenzel´s CAD programme are accurate, so are the same as the volumes on the boards themselves...as for info etc, can´t help there, not until we launch Oct 1st..sorry...

Hello Jochen,

Thank you for the good feedback and advice to my earlier thread. Some additional questions from my end:

1) What about the new Quad boards - is that an option for me ?
2) What type of NorthSails goes best with these boards ?
3) Can the sails also be used by a boy of 11 (starter) or do I need other sails for him.
4) What board do you recommend for kids. Was thinking myself of a Big Techno 295 because it's a big surfing class for kids which I believe could be good to start competitive surfing.

Looking forward to your feedback,

Ray 2009 - broken nose repair

Hi,

so, it finally happened - a catapult and broken nose on my few-sessions-old Ray.
At least I can see now what's inside: the laminate on the nose is super-thin, no wonder it snapped some 5cm from the top to the bottom. What a drag.

Now, I have a few questions to someone with experience with board repairs:

1. Should I have the entire damaged piece removed and re-built or should I have the cracks patched? it will sure be more solid if it's rebuilt, but then it's a nose, which has no big structural responsibility, and as experience shows I should probably put a fat nose protector over it anyway...
2. What materials should be used for the repair? will any PVC foam do or should I look for something particular? Stick to glass or insist on, say, Kevlar for more impact resistance?
3. There's wood in the sandwich - how to bind new laminate to that? If I sand down a layer of old laminate the new resin won't bind to wood and if I leave it without sanding the new layer will stick out and it will be ugly..

Thanks a lot for suggestions!

I own a 145 Shark and the smallest recommended sale is a 6.0, can I rig something smaller on this board? The wind is really picking up where I sail and last time out on a 6.5, my smallest sail, I was totally over powered.

Thanks,
