INFO

When and where did you start Wing Foiling? Ken Winner lives on Maui. At the start of wingfoiling, he was frequently testing gear and I was really interested in the sport. Almost two years ago, I asked if I could give it a go and he gave me a wing to try. I started out by going on Maliko downwinders in Maui. These are really long downwinders when its really windy so theres quite a bit of ocean swell to help you along. It was really amazing to go for over an hour downwind trying to get up onto the board.

What’s your watersports history – from which side did you enter Winging? I have been kitesurfing for many years. I know how to kite foil and prone foil so I had an initial knowledge of how to get up onto a foil. I am also an avid surfer.

What do you love about Wing Foiling? I love the versatility of the sport. I love doing downwinders on big ocean swell, riding in the waves, and attempting freestyle tricks. Its also so new so it feels like theres lots to explore in the sport!

What’s your favourite conditions? I love when it is nuking a steady 30 knots so I can ride my 26L board and 4m Unit.

What’s your top advice for a beginner? Start by learning how to get up on the board. You don’t necessarily need to get up onto the foil straight away! Many people I see want to get up on the foil their first session, but the most important first steps are the learn how to maneuverer the wing in the water, and to learn to stand up on the board.

Boom or handles? I love the handles! When trying new tricks, I have found that I often fall on top of the wing. It is nice to have something soft to fall on every time. I typically only keep my hands on the first and last handle – so I don’t feel like I need to move my hands around all that much.
